St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

Science

Welcome to our Science page!

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that every child should experience awe and wonder about the world God gave us to look after.

We believe that hands-on experiences, practical and engaging lessons as well as purpose for learning underpin the teaching of science at St Joseph’s!

We aim to provide the children with the skills and knowledge to lead their own investigations. We encourage the children to: discover, ask, observe, collaborate, predict and conclude. All of the necessary knowledge and skills are carefully embedded within each topic across the school.

Across the school, children are enabled to develop their understanding through the five Scientific Areas of Enquiry as outlined by the National Curriculum.

  These are:

  • Observation over time
  • Pattern seeking
  • Identifying, classifying and grouping
  • Comparative and fair testing
  • Researching (KS2)

At St Joseph’s we follow the National curriculum objectives that are linked to topic themes found in the curriculum overviews.

For more detailed information about the intent of science, how it is implemented in the classroom and the impact it will have on the children at St Joseph’s, please see the Curriculum Aims document below.

In order to see how the children’s skills and knowledge will develop throughout their time at St Joseph's, please see our ‘Curriculum Aims’ and ‘Knowledge and Skills Progression Ladder’ below.
