"Pupils develop highly positive attitudes to learning because relationships with staff are strong. Adults encourage pupils to ‘have a go’ and reinforce the message that they should work without fear of failure. Consequently, pupils willingly try new things, confident that their teachers and learning support assistants will help them if they go wrong or get stuck."

Year 1

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Luton, Year 1 builds on the strong foundations established in the Early Years, nurturing children’s curiosity, creativity and enjoyment of learning.

We support a positive transition into Key Stage 1 through a balance of purposeful play, practical exploration and increasingly structured teaching. With high expectations for every child, we develop essential skills in reading, writing and mathematics alongside an exciting curriculum that encourages children to ask questions, share ideas and discover new interests.

Our warm, supportive environment helps children grow in confidence, independence and resilience, celebrating their achievements and encouraging them to embrace new challenges.

Guided by our mission, “In the Light of Jesus we Learn to Shine,” we value each child’s unique gifts and make learning engaging, meaningful and fun.
