"Pupils develop highly positive attitudes to learning because relationships with staff are strong. Adults encourage pupils to ‘have a go’ and reinforce the message that they should work without fear of failure. Consequently, pupils willingly try new things, confident that their teachers and learning support assistants will help them if they go wrong or get stuck."

Year 5

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Luton, Year 5 marks the beginning of upper Key Stage 2, as children become increasingly independent, thoughtful and confident learners.

Building on their achievements in Year 4, our broad and engaging curriculum challenges pupils to make connections, explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge to new situations. We encourage children to take greater responsibility for their learning, organise their work and respond positively to feedback, while developing teamwork and respect for different viewpoints. High expectations, careful assessment and teaching adapted to individual needs ensure that every child receives the support and challenge they need to progress.

Guided by our mission, “In the Light of Jesus we Learn to Shine,” we nurture each child’s unique gifts, resilience and enjoyment of learning as they prepare for Year 6.
